In Production:
In all the oceans of the world, there is one predator which stands firmly atop the food chain; a hunter of such skill and prowess, that even Great White sharks fear its eerie call. What creature so dominates the underwater realm which covers more than two-thirds of the Earth's surface? It is Orca, the Killer Whale.
The name, orca, derives from ancient Rome, and means "belonging to the realm of the dead". The Romans believed them to be vicious killers, a misconception that, astonishingly, stayed with us until the mid 1960's. Until then, despite the fact that they had never killed a
human being in the wild, we slaughtered them by the thousands.
Today, we know that killer whales are a remarkably complex, intelligent and sophisticated species. They never fight with one another, or compete for food or territory. They possess the largest brain of any animal on earth. Each pod, or family, speaks a different 'language', just as different nationalities of humans do. In fact, it is now generally agreed by cetologists that killer whales exhibit behaviors and abilities not found outside of the human species.
Though we have learned much about them, there are many mysteries left to be solved. Journey with us to the Pacific Northwest, Canada, New Zealand, and the Crozet Islands on the edge of the Antarctic, as we explore the astonishing world of killer whales.
